Greeting guests with bread and salt is an old Russian tradition. A loaf of bread containing a small dish of salt in the middle is placed on a Rushnik, an embroidered towel. As a sign of hospitality two women from Tauranga's Russian speaking community welcomed guests in this way to the Living in Harmony evening, From Russia with Love, held on 25 May 2016.
The Village Hall was full, and guests were presented with information on Russian history, architecture and customs by MC Iryna Stewart. Local folk dance group Samovar delighted in their colourful costumes with acrobatic dance including leaps and flicks. Nina Byzova, a professional balalaika player, had come from Auckland to perform a few solo pieces and play with the Samovar group.
