The Tauranga Multicultural Council Committee has decided to cancel the postponed 2020 Multicultural Festival due to the resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic in New Zealand. Although we are now at Level 1 all around NZ, we feel that this is the best thing to do in the best interest of all. We wish to thank all our supporters and patrons who have attended and been part of the festival over the years. We look forward to seeing in March 2021.

Come and make a paper crane towards the creation of a ‘Senbazuru’ - 1000 paper cranes - to hang under the Our Place marquee.
This public art installation is being created as a symbol of peace and to celebrate our sister city connections with Hitachi City, in Japan. This activity is part of the ‘Finding Beauty’ Exhibition at Our Place Tauranga from April 15th – May 10th. These workshops are happening across two days on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th from 10:30am till 11:30am. Special thanks to Haruka Day, Tauranga Regional Adviser for the NZ Ryugoku Office, and Multicultural Tauranga for their support running these workshops. See also original Facebook event link. As part of the 2019 Trustpower Photographic Exhibition, Downtown Tauranga is bringing together five winning images from the 2019 Hitachi City Art Exhibition. “This exhibition also celebrates our sister city relationship with Hitachi, Japan,” says a statement from Downtown Tauranga, the organiser of the exhibition.
“Last year the Trustpower Photographic Exhibition winners were featured in Hitachi City and we are reciprocating in 2019 by displaying their images in our city. Tauranga’s sister city relationship was created to promote goodwill and mutual understanding between the citizens of each nation and contribute to the peace of the world. Hitachi became a sister city of Tauranga more than 30 years ago. The ongoing friendship between the two city councils has resulted in 3 yearly exchanges and continuing cultural and learning opportunities.” The exhibition is free to the public and is a partnership exhibition between Downtown Tauranga, Our Place, Multicultural Tauranga, Tauranga City Council, Tuskany Agency, Creative Bay of Plenty, Education Tauranga and Sun Media. It was officially opened by Mayor Greg Brownless on Monday, April 15 at 9:30am. Throughout the month of the exhibition, there is an opening invitation to the public to make a paper crane. Each paper crane will be hung in the Our Place marquee – to create a ‘senbazuru’, or 1000 paper cranes, as a public art installation and symbol of peace to celebrate the sister city connections. After the opening ceremony, the first paper crane making session will take place on Tuesday April 16 from 10.30am to 11.30am, under the marquee at Our Place, with a second session on Wednesday April 17. The exhibition will run from April 15 to May 10 2019. |
