Breaking the language barrier
The Bay of Plenty Interpreting Service, BOPIS, is an initiative established in 2012 to meet the needs of our growing multicultural community. Unlike our other services, BOPIS is run as a non-profit social enterprise, so fees apply.
BOPIS provides face-to-face and telephone interpreting as well as translation of documents. The BOPIS team are vetted, specially trained bi-lingual speakers. They comply with the Code of Ethics including privacy, impartiality and professional conduct. The service is managed by a dedicated part-time Coordinator who works out of our office at the Historic Village.
Our services are used, for example, by the court, the police and other government agencies, but are increasingly also requested by schools, businesses and individuals.
Languages currently available – more than 30 in total – include Punjabi, Hindi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Filipino, Malay, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Polish, Tongan, Kiribati, Japanese, Italian, Thai. Our range of language services is constantly being extended by adding new, qualified interpreters.
